ADHD is classed as a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects behaviour, it is characterised by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
3 Types of ADHD
Relates to difficulty in focusing, lacking concentration, and having a short attention span for things that do not hold their interest
Difficulty controlling movement, behavior, actions, and thoughts.
Is a combination of both
Girls with ADHD often present differently to boys and go undiagnosed for many years, even into adulthood. Boys display hyperactivity and pose issues socially, particularly in school, which impacts students and teachers.
Girls, on the other hand, often present as inattentive with the hyperactivity in their mind rather than in the social environment, this means that their ADHD goes unnoticed and can result in anxiety or depression. They do not cause the same issues socially as hyperactive boys who act out in class.
As of 2023, the UK prevalence rate of adult ADHD was recorded at 3% to 4% and the percentage of children with ADHD is said to be approximately 5%. The number of people being diagnosed with the condition has grown considerably over the last decade and continues to grow. Many believe that the reason for the increase is due to over diagnosis and that ADHD is a myth. At ADHD in Balance, we believe that the reason for this increase in diagnosis is due to the increased knowledge and awareness of the ADHD condition globally.
Research has shown that when you scan the brain of someone with ADHD there are differences in the frontal lobe (pre-frontal cortex) compared to the brain of someone who is neurotypical.
